Summary of Chapter One of Sons and Lovers
The novel opening with a description of the area in which the Morel family lived. It spoke of the new environment of the community in what Mrs. Morel considered a low class area called the Bottoms, on the outskirts of Derbyshire. The reader is introduced to the Morel family which comprises of Mr. Walter Morel, Mrs. Gertrude Coppard Morel who was pregnant and their two children Annie and William. The first event which takes place is William rushing to his mother requesting an immediate dinner to which he was rejected. William had to suppress his eagerness but when he heard the sounds of the event taking place he speedily left the house, at which point young Annie demanded she go to the fair as well. When Mrs. Morel and Annie arrive at the fair, William presents her with a price that he was and was highly pleased with her mother appreciation and gratitude. Although Mrs. Morel decided to go home, William remained but was left with a lingering sadness having let his mother go home alone.
Mrs. Morel after reaching home, resorts to consoling herself with her unwanted pregnancy and retreated to her domestic duties where she reflects of her life as a girl and her meeting Mr. Morel. She recapped the down falls in the relationship as time progressing in their marriage. In her flashback, Mrs. Morel highlights key incidents which contributing to her resentment towards her husband, namely his habitual drinking as a result of their failing relationship, his lies about the payment of bills and their living arrangement and the cutting of Williams hair. Presently,
Mr. Morel arrives home in his usual drunken state and presents what a brought to his wife. Subsequently, the reader learns that Mr. Morel goes out with her friend Jerry, in his drunken state, resorts to sleeping in a field. Upon arrival home, an argument was triggered between Mr. Morel and his wife. After the argument, Mr. Morel locked his pregnant wife out of the house which he subsequently opened after about an hour of her waiting for him to awake.
